Objects grow scarcer as we go back in time. Materials decay, preservation conditions differ, and archaeological recovery varies by region and period.
Recent decades are thin because copyright and trademark protections mean museums often do not hold the rights to publish reusable images.
What has been recorded is uneven too: some forms of dress and some traditions were documented extensively, others barely, if at all.
Some collections or objects are not published online, reflecting community decisions about digital display.
Many garments are held, cataloged and interpreted outside their place of origin or tradition. Each card shows the holding museum and links to the full record.
