Sources Our data comes from museum collection databases and open-access programs. Our records were last rebuilt on 2026-08-25. Sources are listed under Museums.
Records Museum cards show the garment as cataloged by the museum. Title, maker, date, culture and place are never filled in without a corresponding record. The photographs are the museum’s own.
Images Most images are public domain or CC0. Some are for non-commercial use only and require attribution under licenses like CC BY-NC-ND. These are marked NC in the feed.
Map Regional groupings follow the UN’s statistical classification. These are present-day areas for statistical use and stay stable throughout our timeline. Places are checked against the World Historical Gazetteer. Some garments appear in two regions at once when museum records connect them to both.
Time Bands widen stepwise going back: 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 years, reflecting how precisely surviving garments can be dated. Years are CE. BCE is marked. A garment with a broad date range appears once. The time bands covered by the range enter a draw (the more overlapping years, the better the odds), and the garment sits in the winning band for every visitor. Order within a band is arranged for comparison and does not indicate popularity, importance or dating confidence.
